This will be a Juried show
 We are also very excited to have hired Lisa Samphire who you may remember from the Starfish Gallery and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and a well known glass artist in her own right, as our coordinator.

There will be three opportunities for members to consider when applying:

‘The Exhibition in the Atrium’
‘Shop in the Atrium’
‘and/or a Table in the David Foster Room’

 Applications will be available online in mid-January. More information about
the jurying process and show will also be given at that time. It is important to note that you must be a member of IAA to apply for the show.
(Membership due in early January to be eligible to enter and to vote at the AGM)
Our AGM is on Tuesday, February 5th at Cedar Hill Recreation Centre.
Please save the date. This will be our only formal meeting in the Spring and an opportunity to find out more about the show.

The Cowichan Valley Arts Council presents its 47th annual open Fine Arts Show.
A selection of pieces will be selected by a three jurors, based on the following:

Best In Show (1)
Award of Excellence (5)
Honorable Mention (10)
People’s Choice (1)

About the entrants:
¬ must be a CVAC member in good standing at the time of registration.
¬ must be at least 16 years of age.
¬ must ensure that valid “model release” forms have been completed in cases where individuals are represented or photographed and may be recognizable in the work being displayed.

About acceptable entries:
¬ must be original work of the entrant
¬ must be for sale
¬ must be no larger than 18 square feet or 40 cubic feet.
¬ Must be framed and/or ready to hang including a taut wire stretched between eye hooks affixed to both sides of the frame, 1/3 from the top of the frame.
¬ All wire ends must be neatly taped.
¬ Unframed canvases must have finished edges and no staples may be visible
¬ Must not have been shown previously on Vancouver Island.
¬ May be the work of collaboration if collaborators are acknowledged (note new collaborator’s entry fee).
¬ CVAC reserves the right to decline entries that do not meet the above conditions.
¬ No refunds will be issued for late or unacceptable entries.

About the show:
¬ 160 entries will be included on a first come, first served basis; a waiting list will be kept.
¬ As closely as possible the show will include 40% 2D traditional, 30% 2D contemporary, 5% 3D traditional, and 25% 3D contemporary. (see website for detailed descriptions)
¬ A 2% processing fee will be applied to single electronic purchases over $300 (Visa, MC)
¬ All purchases are subject to a 15% CVAC commission charge.
Unsold entries not collected, are subject to a storage fee of $3.00 per day

Beginning at 10 am. Registrations will be taken on-line at the CVAC website (cowichanvalleyartscouncil.ca) and in person at PORTALS from 10 – 5 (The CVAC Centre of Arts, Culture and Heritage, 2687 James St., Duncan, B.C.) No mail-in registrations accepted. First come, first served, up to 150 pieces.



We strongly encourage all members to attend the upcoming AGM and Social Event. It will be half and half of business and fun. The AGM is the most important meeting of the year. At this meeting, the present membership will vote in the new Board of Directors for the upcoming year. In order to vote at the meeting, you must have your membership in good standing. As our year ends now, please make your payments for 2017 and come out to the meeting.

At the AGM, we will report on our major event, Gifts For Myself and Others. The show has been declining over the years and Victoria now has a multitude of Christmas shows. Most shows in Victoria seem to be seeing declines in traffic and sales. Additionally our show coordinator, Jantina, has let us know she doesn’t have the time to continue in this role for the coming year. The sustainability and viability of the show is in question. The board feels the show has run it’s course and it is time to shelve it for now until such time we can create a new and relevant event. We will be discussing the future of this event at the AGM and encourage all members to attend so your thoughts are heard. Additionally, you can email me if you’d like to voice your thoughts in advance or if you can’t attend the AGM.

We really need new members to take up positions on the board. While these positions are serious and take some time, we do our best to make them fun and enjoyable. We need a minimum of 5 Directors to meet the requirements of the Society Act of British Columbia.
Please consider volunteering for a position or nominating someone that may be interested.
The Board meets monthly in the days following the regular meetings and sometimes additional meetings are held if needed. We will definitely need a person to take on the Secretary position.

Additionally, we will be asking for members to help with chairmanships and special projects to keep the workload limited so no one gets burnt out. Give some consideration to the time and effort for monthly meetings, chairmanships, financial decisions and accountability.

The Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria is pleased to host the 18th Annual LOOK Show in partnership with The Bay Centre. Accepting works from emerging to established artists, this year will see a notable expansion into more than one venue which will enable us to include even more in this important cultural exhibition.

The LOOK Show is a non-juried exhibition showcasing local artists and artisans of varied disciplines and designed to highlight not only the exceptional quality but the diversity of the local arts scene. Voices of Women through Canadian History:

An Exhibition Celebrating International
Women’s Day

March 2nd – March 12th, 2017
The Bay Centre

The Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria is pleased to host Voices of Women through Canadian History, an exhibition celebrating International Women’s Day and local women artists. This is a lightly juried show featuring female artists of all levels and disciplines.

More than just an exhibition, this event is a celebration of the diversity of female artists that call the British Columbian West Coast home. The works exhibited will aim to exemplify the Canadian female experience, both personal and societal. The exhibition is all inclusive and is open to a variety of mediums (print, painting, sculpture, installation – to name a few). This exhibition will also feature a series of speakers and performances (TBD).

Open to female-identifying artists who call Vancouver Island or the Gulf Islands home, this exhibition promises to be an exciting event imbued with cultural significance. The show runs from March 2nd until March 12th 2017 at The Bay Centre.
